Purpose & Goals of the Interface Design  Course
The purpose of the website is to teach  principles of interface design  to students currently enrolled in a Digital Design course for Web And Multimedia. Lectures and resources will be delivered via text and multimedia formats. The site contains researched information, design analysis and examples and resource links pertaining to the principles of interface design that encompasses the following:

  • Important concepts of usability and navigation in web and multimedia interactive projects
  • Design theory (color, typography, page layout, etc), concepts and application of screen/visual elements in interfaces
  • Components of an interface that  enhances interactivity
  • Use of flowcharting and story boarding concepts in the planning stages of  web and  multimedia projects
  • Accessibility based on current web standards

Audience/Users for the site
Students  who are enrolled in the Digital Communication Department, Houston Community College. The Digital Communication Department is under Workforce Development where, the focus is to prepare students work in the industry.  Students are comprised of second semester level class, and are either pursuing a Multimedia or Web Development Degree. This is a required class where they  need to study the important components of Interface Design. Concepts learned will be applied in future design projects.

Prerequisites/Qualifications - Students enrolled in the Interface Design Course  must  have the following:

  • A working knowledge of computer systems (example how to save & retrieve documents),
  • Create Microsoft Word Documents and save/print as PDF documents
  • Know a graphics application such as Photoshop or Fireworks that can help design their work.
  • Preferably with HTML coding experience, but NOT required

The interface design course will be delivered as an online course, (20 students per class) . Students will also need to know how to access the internet, have an email account, and have at least a 56k modem connectivity.

Expectations
Upon completion of studying the various lecture components, assignments & projects given in the program, students will be able to

  • Describe user interface conventions
  • Critique existing user interface and screen designs
  • Create effective navigation methods and screen composition for different web and multimedia projects
  • Justify interface and screen design decisions based onprinciples of interface and screen design theory for visual communication and interactivity
  • Understand and utilize the interface design process that includes flowcharting, target audience analysis, and content organization

Goals of Users
Learners or students want to become better designers. They will be able to apply  knowledge concepts learned from expectations of the course  to future web and multimedia  project development.
