The U. S. Coast Guard classifies personal watercraft as Class A inboard boats. That means personal watercraft are subject to the same federal regulations as any other powerboat in addition to the requirements specific to personal watercraft. If you operate one, you have the responsibility of knowing and obeying these boating regulations and practicing boating safety. PWC owners must also be aware that there are local laws and ordinances around the country that further restrict PWC operations. Make certain you know the laws that apply to you in your area of operation.

Besides this, there are also unwritten rules that go beyond what's legally required. These rules of boating etiquette and common sense should also be learned and followed. They help ensure that everyone can share the waterways in harmony. Once you understand and obey all the laws, safety guidelines, and rules of boating etiquette, you can truly begin enjoying this exhilarating pastime.
